What is the Unit Converter?

A unit converter is a tool that translates a measurement from one unit into another while keeping the actual quantity the same. Ten kilometres and 6.21 miles describe exactly the same distance, they are simply expressed in two different measurement systems. This converter handles the six categories people need most in everyday life: length, weight, temperature, volume, speed and area. Each category contains both metric units, used across most of the world, and imperial or US customary units, still common in the United States, the United Kingdom and in many product specifications, recipes and appliance manuals.

Conversions matter more often than most people expect. You read a recipe written in cups and need millilitres, you buy fabric priced per yard but measured in metres, you check a weather forecast in Fahrenheit, you compare a plot listed in marlas against a floor plan drawn in square feet, or you read a car review quoting top speed in mph. Doing these conversions by memory invites mistakes, and rounding errors compound quickly when you scale a recipe or a construction estimate. A converter gives you an exact, instantly updated answer so you can move on with the actual task.

Step-by-step

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Choose a category from the dropdown or the quick buttons: Length, Weight, Temperature, Volume, Speed or Area. The unit lists update to match the category you pick.
  2. 2Type the number you want to convert into the From field. Decimals and negative numbers are both accepted, which matters for temperatures below zero.
  3. 3Select the unit your number is currently in using the From dropdown, for example kilometres, pounds or Celsius.
  4. 4Select the unit you want the answer in using the To dropdown. The converted value appears immediately, no waiting and no page reload.
  5. 5Press Convert to refresh the highlighted result, or press Swap to reverse the direction so the result becomes your new input. This is useful for checking a conversion in both directions.
  6. 6Scroll to the panel below the converter to see your value expressed in every unit of the selected category at once, then use Reset to start again from the defaults.
Methodology

How it works

Most conversions work through a single base unit. Inside each category one unit is chosen as the reference, metres for length, grams for weight, litres for volume, kilometres per hour for speed and square metres for area. Every other unit stores a fixed factor describing how many base units it contains. One mile is 1,609.344 metres, one pound is 453.59237 grams, one acre is 4,046.8564224 square metres. To convert, the tool multiplies your value by the source unit factor to reach the base unit, then divides by the destination unit factor. In plain terms: result = value × (factor of From) ÷ (factor of To).

Temperature is the one exception because its scales do not share a zero point, so a simple multiplication would give wrong answers. Celsius and Fahrenheit cross at different offsets, and Kelvin starts at absolute zero. The converter therefore normalises every temperature to Celsius first, using C = (F − 32) × 5/9 for Fahrenheit and C = K − 273.15 for Kelvin, then converts from Celsius to whatever you asked for with F = C × 9/5 + 32 or K = C + 273.15. That two-step approach keeps freezing at 0 °C, 32 °F and 273.15 K exactly consistent.

All arithmetic uses internationally agreed definitions rather than rounded shortcuts, which is why one inch is treated as exactly 0.0254 metres instead of the approximate 2.5 cm people often use mentally. Results are then displayed with a sensible number of decimal places, more for very small numbers and fewer for large ones, and switched to scientific notation when a value becomes extremely large or extremely small. The underlying calculation always keeps full precision, so the figure you copy is accurate for schoolwork, shopping, cooking and most engineering estimates.

Common questions about the Unit Converter.

Multiply the number of kilometres by 0.621371, or divide it by 1.609344. For example, 10 km × 0.621371 = 6.21 miles, and a 42.195 km marathon is 26.22 miles. To go the other way, multiply miles by 1.609344. For a rough mental estimate, take the kilometres, multiply by 6 and drop a digit: 50 km becomes roughly 30 miles, which is close to the exact 31.07.
