What is the Fuel Cost Calculator?

A Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a journey will consume and what that fuel will cost at current prices. It takes the distance you plan to travel, how efficiently your vehicle uses fuel, and the price per litre, and turns those three numbers into a single figure you can budget against before setting off.

Fuel is one of the largest running costs of owning a vehicle and one of the easiest to underestimate, because it is paid in small amounts spread across the month rather than as a single visible bill. Working out the true cost of a route helps with everyday decisions: whether a daily commute is worth it, how much to charge a client for travel, how to split costs fairly on a shared trip, and whether a longer route with better roads actually costs less than a shorter route through heavy traffic.

Methodology

How it works

The calculation runs in two steps. First, the distance is divided by your fuel efficiency to find how many litres the journey needs. A 300 kilometre trip in a vehicle achieving 12 kilometres per litre requires 25 litres. Second, that litre figure is multiplied by the price per litre to give the total cost. At 280 per litre, those 25 litres cost 7,000.

Accuracy depends almost entirely on the efficiency figure you enter. Real world mileage is usually well below the published number and varies with traffic, air conditioning use, tyre pressure, load, terrain, driving style, and engine condition. The most reliable way to find your own figure is to fill the tank completely, reset the trip meter, drive normally until you refill, then divide the distance travelled by the litres it took to fill up again. Repeat this over a few tanks and use the average.

Fill the tank to the brim, reset your trip meter to zero, drive as you normally would, then refill to the brim again. Divide the kilometres shown on the trip meter by the number of litres it took to refill. Repeating this over three or four tanks and averaging the results gives a far more realistic figure than the published mileage, which is measured under ideal test conditions.
