How it works

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a quick screening number based on weight relative to height.

BMI = weight (kg) / [ height (m) ]²
Your input: 70 / (1.70)²  =  24.2

WHO categories:

  • < 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 — Normal weight
  • 25 – 29.9 — Overweight
  • ≥ 30 — Obese

BMI does not measure body fat directly and may misclassify very muscular or elderly people.

Overview

What is the BMI Calculator?

The BMI Calculator measures Body Mass Index — a quick screening number that tells you whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. Enter your height and weight in metric units to get your BMI and category in one click.

BMI is a starting point for thinking about health and weight goals. It is widely used by doctors, gyms, and insurance providers as a first indicator, even though it does not capture everything about body composition.

Methodology

How it works

BMI is computed as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ (height (m))². For example, 70 kg ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.9.

The WHO classifies BMI under 18.5 as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as normal, 25–29.9 as overweight, and 30+ as obese. For South Asians, including Pakistanis, the threshold for overweight is often lowered to 23 due to higher metabolic risk at lower BMI.

BMI does not distinguish between fat and muscle, so very muscular people may show as overweight while their body fat is low.

For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy. For South Asians, staying below 23 is often recommended due to higher diabetes and heart disease risk.
