Eid al-Adha 2026: Meaning, Significance, and Complete Guide to Qurbani

Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid-ul-Azha or Bakra Eid, is one of the two major Islamic festivals. It will be celebrated in Pakistan on Wednesday, 27 May 2026 (10th Dhul-Hijjah 1447), subject to final moon sighting confirmation.

What Does Eid al-Adha Mean?

Eid al-Adha commemorates the profound act of obedience and sacrifice by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) ﷺ. Allah commanded him in a dream to sacrifice his beloved son, Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) ﷺ. Both father and son submitted wholeheartedly to the will of Allah. At the last moment, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram from heaven.

This event beautifully symbolizes:

  • Total submission to Allah (Islam)
  • Sacrifice of what we love most for the sake of God
  • Faith, obedience, patience, and trust in divine wisdom

What is Qurbani (Udhiyah)?

Qurbani refers to the sacrifice of a permissible animal (goat, sheep, cow, buffalo, or camel) in the name of Allah during the days of Eid al-Adha. It follows the Sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ and is performed to seek closeness to Allah and express gratitude.

The meat of the sacrificed animal is traditionally divided into three equal parts:

  • One-third for your own family
  • One-third for relatives, friends, and neighbors
  • One-third for the poor and needy

This division promotes sharing, generosity, and social welfare.

Who is Eligible (and Obliged) to Perform Qurbani?

According to the Hanafi school (most commonly followed in Pakistan):

Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who is:

  • Sane (mentally sound)
  • Adult (has reached puberty)
  • Resident (not a traveler)
  • Possesses wealth above the Nisab after paying debts and meeting basic needs

Nisab for Qurbani (same as Zakat Nisab)

  • 87.48 grams of gold, OR
  • 612.36 grams of silver

Important Points

  • If both husband and wife have wealth above Nisab, both should perform separate Qurbani.
  • Those below Nisab, children, and travelers are not obliged but can perform Nafl (voluntary) Qurbani for extra reward.
  • In other schools of thought (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali), it is considered a highly emphasized Sunnah.

How Should the Meat Be Shared?

The recommended way is the 1/3 sharing rule mentioned above. Many people also donate their full Qurbani share through trusted charities to help underprivileged families across Pakistan.

Conclusion

Eid al-Adha is not merely about animal sacrifice — it is a reminder to sacrifice our ego, greed, and bad habits for the pleasure of Allah. It teaches us compassion, gratitude, and care for the less fortunate.

May Allah accept all our Qurbani, prayers, and good deeds this Eid. Ameen.

Eid Mubarak! 🌙
